Essa includes Angus, Thornton, Baxter, Utopia, Ivy and other smaller rural communities. Angus is the largest urban centre, while the surrounding township remains defined by farmland, river valleys and country properties.
That mix gives buyers very different choices within a relatively short distance: newer subdivision homes, established village streets, rural acreage and properties tied closely to CFB Borden and the Barrie employment area.

Essa reports 27 parks and more than 20 playgrounds, along with sports fields, splash pads, fishing areas and community facilities.
The Township maintains Pine River Trail and Rippon Trail, while the Thornton–Cookstown Trans Canada Trail and regional conservation-area trails add longer recreational connections.
